Myoko Kogen

Myoko Kogen is situated in Niigata prefecture, the snowiest part of this very snowy country.

The Myoko area is constantly blessed with some of the highest snowfalls and base depth of all Japan resorts. The beautiful Mt. Myoko at 2454m draws the eye and dominates this white wonderland. Snow covered birch and cedar trees add to the atmosphere and create this magical Japanese landscape.

It also enjoys a rich history in Japan skiing including the oldest ski area and the longest vertical drop of any Japanese area at Suginohara.

We have chosen a secluded and beautiful part of this wonderful area to stay during our tours.
This is the perfect place to get down to some serious relaxation. From here we can easily access the excellent Akakura ski area or its little neighbour, one of Japanfs best hidden powder and freeriding spots.

The Myoko Kogen consists of nine ski areas, all with their own distinctive features.

The two below are our pick of the bunch and are included in our Nagano/ Niigata Explorer tour.

Akakura Onsen

Akakura is the largest of the Myoko areas and offers up a wide variety of runs for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.
Snow falls of over a metre overnight are not uncommon and chances of bottomless powder are high.
Great tree skiing is on offer for the powderhounds among us while intermediate and beginner slopes are plentiful and unbelievably empty of people.

The outlook is spectacular, with views of Lake Nojiri and snow covered fields stretching to the Sea of Japan.

Seki Onsen

Probably the less we say about Seki the better. It really can be a fun wee place.
